As quoted in Salt Lake Magazine: "Full of sunny optimism about business and life, [the people] of [PW Companies] do more than just cater to cruise ship passengers and fun-in-the-sun beachgoers. Staying true to their motto, 'Creating fun, joy, smiles and memories for everyone under the sun,' the company donated several tons of its products to relief efforts for [cancer research, local elementary schools, LDS Church Humanitarian Efforts and impoverished communities in Mexico]. And that's something we can all smile about."
Each year, throughout the world, whether it's in our stores directly or through our humanitarian efforts, PW Companies brightens millions of people's lives through its products and shopping experience.
The David B. Pedersen Foundation began in 2005, and it has since awarded more than $200,000 in scholarships. Former Del Sol CEO, Bob Pedersen, and wife, Catherine, including current company President, Jeff Pedersen, and his seven other siblings, created and organized this foundation in honor of their youngest son and brother, David, who passed away in September 2005. The foundation awards scholarships to outstanding students who have "bounced back" from life's obstacles and shown resilience and achievement in scholastics and being drug free.
The David B. Pedersen Foundation works closely with Utah's Granite School District and East High teacher, Leigh VandenAkker (Mrs. V), who spearheads the incredible growth and learning program, Techniques for Tough Times, from which several applying students are selected for scholarships. From the Foundation's inception in 2005 through 2008, it began raising funds organically through private donors and awarding scholarships primarily to students participating in Mrs. V's program at Taylorsville High School. More than 50 scholarships were organized and awarded during that time frame. From 2009 to present, under Mrs. V and the Pedersen's direction, the Scholarship Fund has expanded its reach to East and Olympus High Schools, where many have received the annual $1,000 scholarships.
PW Companies was a main sponsor of the Miles 2 Give team, donating Cariloha's Bamboo Fit gear for all Miles 2 Give runners, including socks, compression shorts, running jerseys, sports bras, work-out pants, capri pants, racerback tanks, performance shirts, and more. They even slept in Cariloha’s Bamboo bed sheets to get much needed rest before giving miles the next day.
Cariloha’s ultra-soft, moisture-wicking, odor-resistant fabrics are made from eco-friendly bamboo. 10,000 miles around the country is the ultimate field test of durability and comfort for Cariloha’s Bamboo Fit product line. Proceeds from Cariloha Bamboo purchases went directly to cancer research at the Huntsman Cancer Institute via the Miles 2 Give Foundation.
PW Companies was a proud sponsor and donor this past week to Spectrum Academy’s annual 1 Mile Fun Run/Walk, 5K and/or 10K, all of which supported further education of students with Autism Spectrum Disorders. The races were all-ages events that started and ended at the school in North Salt Lake City, Utah. For the second year now, PW Companies was able to donate hundreds of color-changing Del Sol bags to the runners and product giveaways for race winners.
Recently, PW Companies donated several of Cariloha's bamboo products to the Alex Lowe Foundation where 100 percent of the money raised goes to the Khumbu Climbing Center in Nepal. This climbing center is a place to train Sherpa Guides in the Everest region on safety protocols. The effort has been stepped up recently in response to the deaths of 16 Sherpas in an avalanche on Everest this past Everest season.
Del Sol’s mission is to create fun, joy, smiles and memories for everyone under the sun. Not only are we able to accomplish this in our Del Sol stores, but also through wonderful donations like these. We are grateful for the opportunity to be involved and to support the cause for bettering the education and lives of so many in Thailand.
